This book is a MUST read.. I read this book in literally 2 days! I hardly wanted to put it down. I have been intrigued with Lizzie Borden and couldn't wait to read a fictionalized story about her, this authors take is beautiful. The book started out slow as it just jumped right into Lizzie finding her father dead. It gave no insight or history on Lizzie Borden. I didn't know if I was going to be able to deal with the events leading up to the murders, this book really didn't cover that but only covered the days leading up to and after the murders. This story is told from 4 different view points; Emma (Lizzie's oldest sister), Bridget (The Irish maid, Benjamin (A total stranger hired by the Borden girls uncle with nefarious intentions), and Miss Lizzie Borden.
The writing on this evocative, even for having "realized" spelled wrong. There's a lot of imagery (specifically, food, and smell imagery). This book is not for that faint of heart, there are some gruesome details. I would skip this one if your not into gore. This was very atmospheric story, and I am not typically for that "flowery" type writing. I like character developments and solid plots and I want an author to describe what's going on clearly and like I mentioned that isn't done in this book, however, because of the 4 different perspective the author got a chance to really play with style without the story being scarified. Emma's the most straightforward of the characters. Lizzie is definitely creepy.
Overall, I found this to be quite enjoyable read, and once it started picking up I didn't want to put it down. We are given a real timeline of events and the end, and it seems as though Schmidt did her research and followed the events very closely. The book sounded like a reasonable explanation for long since unsolved crime. I would love for the author to do a sequel with the trial, but I do feel as though this book has given some sort of resolution.
